Location: Cameron Park, NSW — Servicing Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Maitland
If you've ever grabbed a can of cockroach spray from the supermarket, blitzed the kitchen, and still found roaches running around a week later — you're not alone. It's one of the most common frustrations we hear from homeowners across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The problem isn't you. It's the pest.
German cockroaches, Blattella germanica, are one of the most resilient insects on the planet, and understanding why is the first step to actually getting rid of them.
German vs Australian Cockroaches: What's the Difference?
Not all cockroaches are the same, and the species living in your kitchen matters more than most people realise.
The Australian cockroach is the large, dark brown one you might spot outside or darting across the garage floor at night. It mostly lives outdoors and ventures inside looking for food and water. Unpleasant, yes — but relatively manageable.
German cockroaches are a different problem entirely. They are smaller, about 1.5cm, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and they live almost exclusively indoors — in your kitchen, your bathroom, inside appliances, behind wall sockets, and in the warm voids of your cabinetry. They are fast breeders, highly adaptive, and have developed resistance to many common pesticides.
Why Supermarket Sprays Don't Work
There are a few reasons DIY sprays repeatedly fail:
- They only kill what they contact. Cockroaches hiding deep inside wall cavities, beneath appliances, or inside hinges and motors are completely untouched.
- Sprays trigger avoidance behaviour. Cockroaches detect repellent chemicals and simply retreat further into the structure, making the infestation harder to find and treat.
- They don't address the breeding cycle. A single female German cockroach can produce up to 300 offspring in her lifetime. Killing visible adults while eggs and nymphs remain means the infestation rebounds in weeks.
- Resistance is real. German cockroaches in Australia have developed resistance to pyrethroid-based sprays — the active ingredient in most off-the-shelf products.
What Actually Works: Gel Bait Treatment
Professional gel bait treatment is the industry standard for German cockroach control, and for good reason. Rather than repelling cockroaches, gel bait attracts them. Cockroaches consume the bait and carry the active ingredient back to harbourage sites, where it passes through the colony — including to nymphs and eggs.
This is why gel bait outperforms sprays: it works where cockroaches actually live, not just where you can see them.
At Green Top Pest Management, our German cockroach treatment involves:
- A thorough inspection to identify all harbourage points — not just the obvious ones
- Precision bait placement in hinges, voids, beneath appliances, and behind fixtures
- A follow-up visit at 3 weeks to assess the knockdown and reapply where needed
Most infestations show significant improvement within 7–10 days of the initial treatment.
Signs You Have German Cockroaches
- Small dark droppings resembling coffee grounds in drawers, behind the stove, or in corners
- A musty, oily smell in the kitchen or bathroom
- Egg casings, also known as oothecae — small brown capsules — behind appliances or inside cabinets
- Seeing roaches during the day, which can be a sign of a large infestation
If you're seeing cockroaches during daylight hours, the infestation is likely larger than it appears. Professional treatment and a follow-up visit are strongly recommended.
